Former players return to ‘Tigue’ for weekend

Former UL Ragin’ Cajun closer Kraig Schambough is one of the more than 80 players scheduled to return to M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field this weekend.

More than 80 former UL baseball players are already signed up, and more are scheduled to be at M. L. "Tigue" Moore Field this weekend when the Ragin’ Cajuns host their first full-scale Baseball Alumni Weekend.

The current Cajun squad will face Arkansas-Little Rock in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series beginning Friday, and the alumni players will be taking part in activities on each of the three days.

The alumni highlight of the weekend will come prior to Saturday’s 2:05 p.m. contest, when all of the former players will be recognized and will take part in pre-game activities. Each will take their old positions on the field for the National Anthem.

A social is scheduled for Saturday evening, and the alumni players will also participate in Sunday’s Senior Day and Graduation Day activities prior to the 1 p.m. weekend wrapup.

"We are where we are as a program because of the players that have come through here," said Cajun coach Tony Robichaux, himself a UL baseball alumnus. "We’re going to try to make this an annual event to honor all our former players."

The former players could be in for a special weekend, since UL could wrap up the regular-season Sun Belt title. The Cajuns would claim the outright crown with three wins over the Trojans, or with two wins and one New Orleans loss at Troy over the weekend.

Alumni Weekend committee member Tina Creel said that the baseball office has attempted to contact all former Cajun players through mail, e-mail or by phone. She said that any players who have not been contacted may contact the UL baseball office at 482-6189 to receive information on the weekend activities.

"We want to show the players all the changes to the stadium and the athletic complex, and the indoor facility that’s under construction," Creel said. "A lot of what’s here now wasn’t there when some of these guys played."

Creel said that meals will be provided for alumni players and their families at each game.
