Ragin’ Cajuns Set GPA Record During Fall Term
Over Half Of All UL Student-Athletes Finish Year With A 3.0 GPA Or Better

LAFAYETTE, La. — Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns student-athletes combined to set a school-record with a 2.964 GPA, led by 24 student-athletes who earned a perfect 4.0 GPA.  The record highlights the academic achievements of Louisiana student-athletes during the recently completed fall semester, which were announced on Thursday.

The numbers were compiled by the UL Student-Athlete Academic Center, which coordinates the academic progress of all the Cajuns student-athletes.  The center has tracked the academic performance of student-athletes since 1982.

The performance marked a record fifth straight semester that Louisiana student-athletes had a GPA above 2.80.  The GPA broke the old record of 2.880 set during the spring 2011 term.

Individually, 189 of the 374 student-athletes (50.5 percent)had at least a 3.0 GPA during the fall term.

Forty-two student-athletes completed their degree requirement during the term and graduated in the December commencement, including softball’s Megan Waterman, who was honored as the Outstanding Graduate in the College of Sciences.

”Our student-athletes never fail to amaze me in what they are able to accomplish both on and off the court,” Louisiana Director of Athletics Scott Farmer said.

”When you consider the time and effort that they put  into representing the University at the highest of levels intercollegiately, their accomplishments in the classroom are astounding.

“The academic mission of the department has always been  to provide our student-athletes with the support needed to succeed, both in competition and in every day life.  It makes me proud when I see them perform academically like they did during the fall semester.

“I also want to commend the staff of the Student-Athlete Academic Center, our coaches, athletic staff and members of the University community for providing the support and encouragement that has helped our student-athletes accomplish great things academically,” Farmer added.

Men’s tennis led all sports with a 3.434 GPA during the term with 10 of its 16 student-athletes owning at least a 3.0 GPA and Carl Alberton and Brandon Farine each posting a 4.0 GPA.

Eight of the 16 sports owned a 3.0 team GPA or better, including volleyball (3.401), baseball (3.303), golf (3.241), women’s cross country (3.206), men’s cross country (3.137), women’s tennis (3.082) and softball (3.069).

For women’s tennis, the performance marked the sixth straight semester that the Cajuns registered a 3.0 or better for the squad, the longest active streak.  Men’s tennis (5) and volleyball (5) have the next longest active streaks.

Three teams set school records for their respective sports.
Baseball, which posted a 2.886 GPA last spring, jumped to 3.295 during the fall to rank third among the Cajuns teams.

Men’s golf continued its academic upswing, setting a team record with a 3.241 GPA, its third straight semester above a 3.0.

The football team continued to perform well in the classroom, posting a 2.763 GPA to set the team record for the third time in four semesters under the direction of head coach Mark Hudspeth.

Baseball (Ryan Leonards, Robert Staten & Nicolas Zaunbrecher), soccer (Maggie Golz, Ashley Gussoni & Claire Steward) and volleyball (Kristen Armstrong, Abby Filce & Mandi Gavin) led the way with three student-athletes each with a 4.0.

Rounding out the 4.0 list are women’s basketball’s Megan Whittaker, John Broussard and Riley Saunders from football, golf’s Kelsey Angelle and Thomas Strandemo, Shellie Landry and Megan Waterman from softball, Juliette Clement and Sandra Ahlqvist from women’s tennis, Anna Devitt and Amber Laurent from women’s track and Corbett Ourso (men’s track & CC).
