Athletics: Louisiana Partners With Extra Yard for Teachers

LAFAYETTE – In partnership with the College Football Playoff Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers initiative, student-athletes from the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Athletics Department were able to provide funding for classroom projects in the local community.

Extra Yard for Teachers is the CFP Foundation’s primary philanthropic initiative. The mission is to elevate the teaching profession by inspiring and empowering quality teachers through the development and implementation of programs in three key focus areas: direct provision of resources, teacher recognition, and professional development training.

Schools around the nation have the ability to request funding for various classroom projects using DonorsChoose.org.

The Ragin’ Cajuns Student-Athlete Advisory Committee raised $1,700 – the majority of the funds coming from the gumbo cook-off headed by Sodexo prior to the Appalachian State football game in October. SAAC members reviewed numerous local submissions on the DonorsChoose.org website and were able to select and fully fund five local classroom projects.

"We realize how important education is and wanted to help provide the tools for young students in our community to grow and develop," SAAC vice president Natalie Lebamoff said.

SAAC distributed a portion of the funds earlier this week. On Tuesday, Dec. 6, select Ragin’ Cajuns student-athletes had the opportunity to visit N.P. Moss Prep Academy in Lafayette and award a check to Mr. East’s classroom in efforts to improve student reading levels.
