Athletics: Football, Baseball Earn SBC Team Academic AwardsBoth programs among 16 honored by league for 2013-14 academics
NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference recently honored teams for their work in the classroom as the league announced the winners of its Team Academic Awards. The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns football and baseball teams were among 16 honored by the league for excellence in the classroom during the 2013-14 season. During the Spring 2014 semester, both sports recorded their highest team GPA – baseball (3.331) and football (2.849) – in school history. During the Fall 2013 semester, football performed well in the classroom, leading all sports with 45 student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or above followed by baseball with 27. Baseball also recorded a 3.279 GPA during the semester. The Sun Belt recognizes one team from each of the conference’s sports for the award which is calculated by totaling the student-athlete Grade Point Averages (GPAs) for a team and then dividing it by the total number of student-athletes on that team. The team that has the highest average GPA is named the Team Academic Award winner for that year. All GPAs are based on the previous school year and include the total GPA for the year – not the average of semesters. South Alabama had four teams recognized – the most of any institution. Arkansas State, Louisiana, ULM and Troy each had two teams recognized. 2014-15 Team Academic Awards Football Louisiana Men’s Cross Country South Alabama Women’s Cross Country South Alabama Women’s Soccer Arkansas State Men’s Soccer Hartwick Volleyball UL Monroe Men’s Track & Field South Alabama Women’s Track & Field Troy Women’s Basketball UT Arlington Men’s Basketball UL Monroe Women’s Golf UALR Men’s Tennis Georgia State Women’s Tennis Arkansas State Men’s Golf Troy Softball South Alabama Baseball Louisiana
