UL’s student-athletes have combined to post a GPA of 2.7 or above in 14 consecutive semesters

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns student-athletes posted an unbelievable 2.839 grade-point-average in the Fall 2010 semester.  By comparison, the University undergraduate student body posted a 2.701 for the Fall 2010 semester.

It marked the 14th consecutive semester UL’s student-athletes combined for a 2.7 GPA or better and was the highest recorded GPA since the Fall 2005 semester.

Over 45 percent of the Cajuns student-athletes (157) posted a 3.0 grade-point-average or higher during the Fall 2010 semester.

The female student-athletes’ GPA was again above a 3.0 (3.02) with 59 percent (70 of 119) of all female athletes earning a 3.0 or better.  The entire Cajuns student-athletes currently hold an overall cumulative GPA of 2.825, which is higher than the University’s general student body cumulative GPA (2.755).

"The student-athletes at this University are a shining example of what’s great about college athletics," Interim Director of Athletics Scott Farmer said.  "They put the work in to succeed in the classroom, which will in turn help them succeed in life.  Smarter students are smarter athletes.

"While the credit needs to go to our outstanding student athletes, our coaches and administrators should be proud of their commitment to academic excellence and providing the foundation for our student-athletes to succeed."

Thirteen of the Cajuns 16 teams had higher GPA’s in the Fall 2010 semester than the corresponding all-female (2.8099)/all-male (2.5583) campus average.

In addition, seven of the Cajuns eight women’s teams had at least 50 percent of their student-athletes earn a 3.0 or better.

Women’s tennis (3.29) scored top team GPA honors for the Fall 2010 semester.

Softball notched a 3.14 GPA and has posted a team GPA of 3.0 or better in each of the last seven consecutive semesters.  Baseball had their second straight semester with over a 3.0 team GPA.  The team had a 3.09 in the Fall 2010 after posting a 3.016 in the Spring 2010.

The soccer team had a Fall 2010 team GPA of 3.25.  It was soccer’s 16th consecutive semester with a team GPA greater than 3.0.

"From a 2.531 in the Fall of 2000 to a 2.839 in the Fall of 2010 is remarkable," Farmer added.  "The University has committed more resources to the academic development of our students and our professors share in that continued success.
