Athletics: All Sports Perform Well For Ragin’ Cajuns In NCAA APR ReleaseALL SPORTS PERFORM WELL FOR RAGIN CAJUNS IN NCAA APR RELEASE
LAFAYETTE All of the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns 16 varsity sports exceeded the required cutoff point of 930 as the annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) was released on Wednesday by the NCAA.
Ten sports scored above a 960 on the four-year average, highlighted by women s tennis, which scored a four-year average of 992 and was tied for the best among schools in the state of Louisiana with LSU and Northwestern State.
Women s cross country (991), men s cross country (986), women s soccer (984), softball (982), women s indoor track (973), women s outdoor track (973), baseball (969), men s tennis (963) and men s golf (960) all met or exceeded the 960 mark.
Men s and women s cross country each posted the second-highest average among Sun Belt Conference schools with football (951) tied for second in the state of Louisiana behind Tulane.
"We are extremely proud of the many outstanding accomplishments of our student-athletes, both on the field and in the classroom, Director of Athletics Scott Farmer said. Our coaches, student-athletes and academic staff have done an incredible job in their commitment to excellence, and these APR numbers are further proof of this commitment."
On the field, the Ragin Cajuns have enjoyed one of the most successful years in school history with five programs football, men s basketball, men s tennis, softball and baseball claiming either a Sun Belt Conference regular-season and/or tournament championship. The Ragin Cajuns softball team claimed both the SBC regular-season and tournament title while the Cajuns baseball team earned the SBC regular-season title and will compete in next week s tournament in Mobile.
"Our athletic program is currently concluding a historic year both athletically and academically, Farmer said.
Every Division I sports team calculates its APR each academic year, based on the eligibility and retention of each scholarship student-athlete. Teams scoring below certain thresholds can face sanctions, such as scholarship losses and restrictions on practice. Rates are based on the past four years’ performance.
Beginning with the 2012-13 season, teams must have earned a minimum 900 four-year APR or a 930 average over the most recent two years to be eligible to participate in postseason tournaments and championships.
For the 2014-15 championships, teams must earn a 930 four-year average APR or a 940 average over the most recent two years to participate in championships. In 2015-16 and beyond, teams must earn a four-year APR of 930 to compete in championships.
