John A. Dugas – Health & Education, Class of 2001John A. Dugas Class of 2001 In the spring of 1998, I enrolled at USL as a full-time student. After ten years in the blue collar work force, I was able to realize a dream that seemed unattainable. With the help of my parents, my daughter, and some very special people at USL, I am now able to attend school full-time, work for the university, and still have time to spend with my daughter. The whole experience is somewhat of a personal rebirth. There were times when I was unsure if I belonged at USL. Being a twenty-nine year old freshman can be awkward and intimidating at times; however, there is one thing all motivated students have in common–the drive to succeed. I think I have an advantage in some respects over “traditional” students, as I can truly appreciate the privilege of being able to attend USL, something so many seem to take for granted. Being a Health and Physical Education major, I look forward to the challenges and rewards that come with educating our youth. I have often envied my father and my three sisters, who are all teachers. Even though this is only my third semester, I have memories that I will cherish forever, and have made friendships that will last a lifetime.
