Ragin’ Cajuns end season with 6-10-3 record

FOLEY, Ala. – Karleen Bedre scored an equalizer goal on a penalty kick in the 85^th minute and the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Women’s Soccer team had three opportunities to advance to the Sun Belt Conference quarterfinals, but fell to No. 7-seeded Little Rock in a shootout on Monday at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.
 
Louisiana, which saw its season end at 6-10-3, had an on-goal attempt in the 90^th minute of regulation stopped by Little Rock’s Saskia Wagner, a last-second attempt inside the 18-yard box by Izzy Wheeler collected by Wagner near the end of the first overtime and an attempt by Sutter in the 109^th minute carom off the crossbar.
 
Little Rock (7-7-5), which will face No. 2-seeded South Alabama on Wednesday, took a 1-0 lead in the 77^th minute when Abril Lucio took a pass from Natalee Geren and score past Lauryn Starwood into the lower right corner of the goal.
 
The Ragin’ Cajuns would answer after Ruthny Mathurin was fouled inside the 18-yard box, giving Louisiana a penalty kick attempt. Bedre converted on her first collegiate PK attempt, getting Wagner to dive to her left before knocking the ball the opposite way for her team-high sixth goal of the season.
 
Wagner, who stopped seven shots for the Trojans, posted a pair of saves in the first overtime period by collecting shots from Hailey Hoffmann and Wheeler. Sutter, who attempted three shots in the match, narrowly missed on a left-footed attempt in the second overtime before her second attempt in the final period hit the crossbar.
 
Little Rock made its first three shots in the shootout to advance as Lucio, Bergros Asgeirsdottir and Fanney Einarsdottir placed penalty kicks past Starwood. Louisiana, playing in its first shootout in school history, had Alyssa Abbott’s attempt bounce off the right post while Wagner stopped an attempt by Carol Rodriguez and Hailey Daigle missed high.
 
Bedre, who moved into sole possession of fifth place in school history with her 16^th career goal, attempted seven of Louisiana’s 18 shots in the match. Starwood, making her first start of the season, recorded six saves.
