Growth & Business: It’s Good to be in the red

Local business firms express their UL spirit

Analisa Leonard’s red wind pants and white company T-shirt were more than just comfortable on Friday, they led to free UL football tickets.

Leonard, a medical coder at The Schumacher Group on Corporate Boulevard, won tickets to the Ragin’ Cajuns home opener Sept. 8 against Ohio University.

The company promotes "Wear Red" day with vigor among employees, bringing together 161 staff member supporting UL for a company photo on Friday morning.

Leonard will carry that enthusiasm on for another week in anticipation of the game.

"(My son’s) a football fanatic, I’m a football fanatic, so I think we’re going to enjoy these tickets," she said.

All of Lafayette was encouraged to wear red clothing Friday to support UL’s football season opener at South Carolina today. Many businesses made a point to make Friday a fun casual day for employees and a show of support to UL.

"We get a lot of great graduates from the university, so this is our way of giving back," said Gayle George, vice president of Human Resources at The Schumacher Group.

At Women’s & Children’s Hospital, prizes galore were given away to employees throughout the day, the most sought after being UL scrubs (a nursing uniform).

Anyone who wore red got free dessert in the hospital cafeteria and memorabilia from the moniker days of SLI, USL and now UL-Lafayette.

"UL is part of our community and part of our growth here at the hospital," said Jeffery Castille, hospital spokesman. "We have several staff who either graduated from UL or are still attending there. … Without UL, we wouldn’t have much in this hospital."
