MOBILE, Ala.–Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns women’s soccer team’s winless streak against South Alabama came to an end on Friday night as UL (8-6-4, 4-2-3 Sun Belt) claimed a 3-2 win over the Jaguars (8-6-3, 3-4-2 SBC) in Mobile. 

 

The win was a monumental win for the Cajuns.  Not only was the victory the first time in school history against South Alabama, but it gave the Cajuns eight wins, tying them for the most in school history. 

 

The Cajuns win also tied Kristen Malen with Stephanie Weston for most victories in a season. 

 

Courtney Hofland got the Cajuns started with her fifth goal of the season.  She took a pass from Heather Fuller to put the Ragin’ Cajuns ahead, 1-0, at the 8:22 mark of the first half. 

 

At 25:29 in the first half, senior Stephanie Lynch increased UL’s lead to 2-0.  She netted her fifth goal of the season off of a helper by Fuller. 

 

The goal by Lynch gave the Evansville, Ind. native 10 for her career, tying her with Stacy Smith (2002) for the second most goals in a career. 

 

Fuller’s two assists were the first two of her Cajuns’ career and the third time this season that a Ragin’ Cajuns player recorded a pair of assists in the same match.  Callie Oliver had a pair of helpers against UALR on Oct. 5, while Jordan Blevins dished out two assists at Nicholls State on Sept. 19.

 

One minute after Lynch’s goal, the Jaguars responded with a goal by Shoshana Sevel. 

 

Jenn Hungate pushed the lead back to two with her first career goal.  Hungate took a pass from Lynch to put the Cajuns ahead, 3-1. 

 

Hungate’s goal proved to be the match-winning goal as USA’s Sam Stocker netted a goal in the 72^nd minute of the match. 

 

“It was a big match for our players,” head coach Scot Wieland commented after the match.  “They did what they needed to do on the win.  Anytime you can get a conference win on the road, especially this late in the season, it’s a great thing. 

 

“The girls played hard and I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

 

The Ragin’ Cajuns continue their road swing in Alabama as they travel to Troy.  The Cajuns and Trojans square off on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.  The Cajuns will look to make history as they go for a UL record ninth win and their fifth Sun Belt Conference win.
