LAFAYETTE – Five Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball players were named National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athletes for the 2006-07 academic year. Kelly Cormier (Abbeville, La.), Meagan Godwin (Bridge City, Texas), Brittany Cuevas (Brazoria, Texas), Shari Sigur (Lafayette, La.) and Courtney Trahan (Maurice, La.) were honored for their excellence in the classroom.

All five were freshmen last season with the true freshman Cuevas making an immediate impact. Cuevas, the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, led the Cajuns with a 31-9 record in the circle, while striking out a team-best 291 batters. She held the opposition to a .207 average at the plate, while tossing 10 shutouts and 34 complete games.

Godwin hit .200 with six doubles, three home runs and 23 RBI in 58 games. Sigur went 2-1 with two saves and a 2.85 ERA in 13 appearances, while Trahan scored 24 runs as a pinch runner. Cormier did not play in 2007, taking a redshirt.

The NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete award recognizes those student-athletes who have earned a 3.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for an academic year.
