Blog: A Day in the Life of a Cajun 3-4-08 To be a student-athlete it takes a lot of dedication and time. My days are filled with things to do from the time I wake up until the time I go to bed. A softball player’s days consist of the 4 S’s: school, softball, study hall and sleep. My days start at around 7:00 or 8:00 a.m., depending on what time I have class. I go to school until about noon. I get home around 12:30 and eat lunch. I even have a little time to rest or do some homework before practice. I leave to go to practice around 1:30 or 2:30, depending on what time practice is. I stay at practice for about an hour and a half to 2 hours. I get home at about 6:00 or 6:15, if I don’t have any errands to run. I take a quick shower and eat some supper. Then it’s off to study hall. Let me explain to you what study hall is. Study hall is a room filled with computers and desks. It is the place where athletes go to study at night or during the day. Some athletes have a required number of hours they have to spend in study hall each week. I have 2 hours this semester, which is not that hard to get, but my first semester I had 6 hours. That was a little rough. If I wasn’t at school or practice I was at study hall. After study hall, I go home and finish any other homework or studying I have to do. Somewhere in my week I have to find time to clean my house. That usually gets done on our off days. I also have to worry about washing my clothes, which is a pain. I tend to only wash them and never save them, which is probably why my whole wardrobe is on the chair in my room. I go to bed at about 10:30 or 11:00 p.m. and wake up the next morning and do it all over again. This is a typical day for me, but during season things go a little differently. During season, we have to miss quite a few classes for away trips. I have to really keep myself on track with school so that I don’t get too behind. When I miss a class I have to worry about finding out what work is due for the next class and get the notes that I missed for the class. I do most of my catch up work during the hours we spend on the bus to our away games. At least I always have something to do on the bus instead of being bored.
I know it sounds like I have a jam-packed day but it is something I have to deal with in order to play the sport that I love. I wouldn’t give that up for anything.
