Softball: Player’s Blog – Vanessa Soto

Vanessa Soto (San Diego, CA., Sr., 2b/3b)

Watching my teammates practice, I am certain that an outsider to the sporting world would never guess that we are halfway through conference play and 42 games into our season.  The energy is as intense as it was the first day of practice and I continue to watch my teammates commit to getting better.  It overwhelms me with pride to know that I am a part of such a determined, focused group of girls.

We have spent this week at practice preparing for our series against Florida Atlantic University, a respected opponent in the Sun Belt. Although we are riding ten game win streak, we know we must be willing to fight every pitch for every inch when we step out on the field, should we expect to win.  That being said, we are extremely excited to take the field on Wednesday and put our hard word on the line in front of our favorite fans.

Our hitter’s bats are looking great after really coming alive last weekend against South Alabama and our slappers are looking faster and more intimidating than ever.  I know our defense is prepared to do whatever it takes to win when I watch every one of my teammates leave practice dirty from hustling after balls.  The positive atmosphere is contagious as we continue to work hard and make adjustments to improve our game.

I am personally looking forward to this mid week series because both of my parents are in town.  Since I am from California it is difficult for my parents to make it to a lot of games so I am very excited that they will be here.  Seeing them waiting for me after the games with open arms is the greatest gift that many people take for granted!  Wednesday’s doubleheader is also my mom’s birthday, and she has made it a point to tell me all she wants as a gift is three wins against FAU.  I know my teammates and I will do everything we can to grant her birthday wish.
