LAFAYETTE-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team clinched their seventh Sun
Belt Conference Regular Season Championship last weekend with a sweep of
Troy.  The Cajuns’ final game with the Trojans was rained out making it
mathematically impossible for any SBC team to catch the first place Cajuns.

UL was hurt during the 2007 season by a rain out.  The canceled game
contributed to the Cajuns falling a half a game short of claiming their
seventh consecutive Sun Belt Conference Regular Season Championship.

This season the Cajuns have had two rain outs.  However, it was the final of
the two rain outs that secured the conference title for the Cajuns.  The
Ragin’ Cajuns are 17-2 in Sun Belt Conference play this season with three
games to play.  Every other Sun Belt school has at least six losses in
conference action.

The regular season championship is the seventh for Louisiana in the last
eight years.  The Cajuns were the only team in the conference to win the
regular season before being edged last season.

The Ragin’ Cajuns are currently in the midst of an 18-game winning streak
that includes 14 consecutive Sun Belt victories.

During the winning streak, the Cajuns have boasted 10 shutouts to go along
with a .346 team batting average.  UL has outscored its opponents 111-to-26
during the streak.  The Cajuns offense has pounded out 168 hits including 13
doubles, five triples and 15 home runs.  In the circle, UL’s trio of pitchers
has earned a 1.12 ERA and recorded 173 strikeouts.

The Ragin’ Cajuns softball team steps out of conference for a midweek
doubleheader with top-10 opponent Houston on Wednesday night.  The double dip
is slated to start at 4:00 p.m. at Cougar Softball Stadium.

The games with the Cougars will mark the match-up of two conference
champions, as Houston secured the Conference USA title over the weekend.

The Cajuns and Cougars met up three times last season with UL holding the 2-1
edge.  Louisiana posted a pair of shutouts against Houston in 2007 claiming a
5-0 victory and a 14-0 mercy-rule win.

Houston’s win over the Cajuns came in the opening game of the 2007 NCAA
Regionals in College Station, Texas.  The two teams battled for nine innings
before the Cougars claimed a 4-3 victory.

Following the twin bill with Houston, the Ragin’ Cajuns will return home to
Lamson Park for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series with ULM.  The Cajuns
and Warhawks will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 3 at 1:00 p.m. before
concluding the series with a televised game on Sunday, May 4 at 12:00 p.m.
Sunday’s game will be broadcast on MyKLAF in Louisiana and serve as Senior
Day.
