LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns center Theo Akwuba notched the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s initial Men’s Basketball Player of the Week award for the 2020-21 campaign, per an announcement by the LSWA on Monday afternoon.
The weekly honor is voted on by the state’s sports information directors along with select members of the media.
A newcomer to the Ragin’ Cajuns program, Akwuba averaged a double-double in his first three games for Louisiana, posting a team-high 18.3 points per game along with a Sun Belt-leading 11.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game, all while going a combined 21-for-24 (88 percent) from the floor and 12-for-14 (86 percent) from the free throw line.
The 6-foot-11 junior helped Louisiana to a pair of victories during the opening stretch, beginning with a hard-fought 66-63 win at New Orleans where Akwuba scored 16 points and pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds in pacing the Ragin’ Cajuns to their seventh straight win over the Privateers and third straight at Lakefront Arena.
The Alabama native closed out the week with two perfect nights from the field, opening with a 9-for-9 performance against No. 1 Baylor before following up with a 6-for-6 showing in Louisiana’s 84-73 win over NAIA nationally-ranked LSU Shreveport on Saturday, dropping 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
