Devin Carrey finished the Mean Green Classic in first place, helping the Cajuns to their first victory in the Theo Sliman Era.

DENTON, Texas-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golf team entered the final round of
play at the Mean Green Classic in fourth place, but managed to battle the
weather and the field for the first victory of the season.  The win was extra
special as it was the first victory for first-year head coach Theo Sliman.

"We wanted to win the first event of the season for Coach Sliman," senior and
individual medalist Devin Carrey remarked after the tournament.  "I think it
is a good start to the season and good for coach to come out and win the
first event of the year.  This win was strictly for coach."

The Cajuns shared the victory with Sam Houston State who also finished the
tournament at 14-over par.  UL finished just one stroke ahead of fellow Sun
Belt opponent UALR and eight strokes ahead of tournament-host North Texas.

For the second consecutive year, the weather played a major role in the
tournament.  The clouds opened up with a torrential down pour when the
players reached the fifth hole of the morning and did not let up for the
remainder of the tournament.

"The weather was absolutely miserable," Carrey commented.  "We started off
really strong as a team, but kind of fell off a bit once it started raining.
Fortunately, our effort was good enough to win today."

As a team, the Cajuns made the turn at six-under par, but because of the
inclement weather, UL quickly gave back some strokes en route to their four-
over par round of 292.

Carrey paced the Ragin’ Cajuns golf team with his four-under par round of
68.  The Canada native did not shoot over par in any round of the tournament
en route to his first individual victory of the season.

In his final round of the tournament, Carrey recorded six birdies en route to
his round of 68.  His four-under par performance was two stroke off of his
career best 66 at the 2007 Louisiana Classics and the 2007 Battle on the
Bend.

The win was Carrey’s second consecutive victory at the Mean Green Classic.
In a rain-shortened event in 2007, Carrey carded rounds of 70 and 69 to take
home the individual title.  Carrey has recorded five consecutive rounds of
par or better at the Mean Green Classic.

Aside from Carrey, the Cajuns placed two other players in the top 10.

Senior Dustin Petit turned in a one-under par performance to move into sixth
place for the tournament, while true freshman Andrew Noto shot a three-over
par 75 to finish his first collegiate tournament in 10th place.

Junior Mark Brockhurst, who was playing in his first tournament since the
2006-07 season, shot a final round of 78, while freshman Philipp Fendt also
shot a 78 on the day.

Thomas Disch carded a final round of 79 while competing as an individual
which placed him in a tie for 39th for the tournament.

The victory marks the first win for the Cajuns golf team, since the Cajuns
dominated the 2008 Gado North Texas Classic by a tournament-record 22
strokes.

The Ragin’ Cajuns golf team will look to continue their stellar play next
week as they head to Lawrence, Kan. for the Kansas Invitational.  The
tournament begins on Monday, Sept. 17 with two rounds, before concluding on
Tuesday, Sept. 18.

UL played in the 2006 Kansas Invitational finishing the event in seventh
place.  Carrey finished the tournament in a tie for seventh place, while
current Cajuns golfers Brockhurst and Kyle Pritchard finished tied for 48th
and 55th, respectively.
