UL Notebook: Desormeauxs; Rematch with K State; Big 12; Odds & Ends

Joshua Parrott • jparrott@theadvertiser.com • September 23, 2008

UL quarterback Mike Desormeaux recently shared his highlight as a Ragin’ Cajun with younger brother Matt Desormeaux.

Big brother found little brother for a 16-yard pass play in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 44-27 win over Kent State at Cajun Field.

It was the first collegiate reception for Matt, a sophomore tight end.

"That was probably the best thing I’ve ever done in my athletic career," said Mike, a senior. "That was a blessing.

"It was amazing."

Time for a rematch

UL, which plays at Kansas State on Saturday, last faced the Wildcats on Sept. 18, 2004.

The Cajuns suffered a 40-20 loss as Darren Sproles ran for 292 yards – the second-most rushing yards by an individual against UL.

Jerry Babb rushed for 101 yards, making him the first Cajun quarterback to hit the 100-yard mark since Tyjuan Hayes did it against Arkansas on Sept. 21, 1991.

Kansas State also beat UL, 34-6, while a member of the Big Eight on Sept. 3, 1994. The Wildcats are 7-2 all time against teams from Louisiana, with their losses to LSU in 1980 and Louisiana Tech in ’88.

Ugly history

The Cajuns are 1-14 all time against teams from the Big 12 Conference.

UL’s lone win in the league was a 29-22 win over 25th-ranked Texas A&M in front of a Cajun Field-record crowd of 38,783 on Sept. 14, 1996.

Kansas State is 13-1 lifetime against current members of the Sun Belt. The Wildcats are riding a 10-game winning streak against the league, with their lone loss to North Texas in 1985.

Odds and Ends

Kansas State is one of four teams in the country – and the lone Big 12 school – that has yet to allow a sack this season … UL coach Rickey Bustle is 0-5 against the Big 12. That includes losses two losses to Texas A&M (2002 and ’06), one to Oklahoma State (’03), one to Kansas State (’04) and one to Texas (’05) … Kansas State has scored 20 non-offensive touchdowns under coach Ron Prince and 64 since 1999. That’s second nationally behind only Virginia Tech’s 68 … In the past 18 years at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, Kansas State is 99-20-1. That includes a 51-3 mark in non-league play … Kansas State has led at halftime in all 14 of their wins under Prince and trailed at the half in 12 of 14 losses. The program is 116-19 since 1990 when it scores first. The Wildcats have scored in 143 consecutive games, the 12th-longest active streak in the nation.
