Football: Fenroy, Keyes honored as players of the week

Joshua Parrott • jparrott@theadvertiser.com • September 30, 2008

UL fell just short of an upset last weekend in a 45-37 loss at Kansas State, but had two seniors honored on Monday as the Sun Belt named its players of the week.

Running back Tyrell Fenroy (offensive) and strong safety Derik Keyes (defensive) were both honored by the league after standout performances against K-State.

Fenroy ran for 183 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 9.1 yards on 20 carries. He also added a 12-yard reception as he earned player of the week honors for the third time in his career – and for the first time since his freshman season.

The LaPlace native sparked UL’s rally against the Wildcats with a 15-yard TD run late in the first half. His other TD runs – covering 1 and 69 yards – narrowed the Cajuns’ deficit to 42-37 with 8:49 left.

Keyes set a career high with 18 tackles, including 11 solos, to shatter his previous personal best of seven set against Southern Miss earlier this season. It was the most tackles by a Cajun defender since Kyries Hebert logged 20 at Minnesota on Sept. 8, 2001.

A Lafayette High graduate, Keyes got the award on his 23rd birthday.

"I’m very pleased and proud for them," Bustle said. "Derik had a heck of a game and a lot of tackles. Fenroy will be the first one to tell you he’ll give the credit to the offensive line."

Looking back

UL linebackers coach Tim Rebowe, who spent the previous four seasons coaching safeties for the Cajuns, has strong ties across the state of Louisiana.

That includes at ULM, where he coached cornerbacks from 2001-03. Rebowe was named the interim head coach for the Warhawks in the spring of 2003 when then-head coach Mike Collins resigned after being arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated.

Rebowe joined UL’s coaching staff prior to the ’04 season.

Odds and Ends

Fenroy is now the NCAA’s active leader among running backs with 3,724 career rushing yards, trailing only West Virginia quarterback Pat White (3,875). Fenroy also became the first Cajun with 4,000 combined rushing and receiving yards in a career. He needs 327 rushing yards to become the Sun Belt’s all-time leading rusher … The Cajuns have seen 15 different players make at least one catch this season. That’s good for third in the nation behind only Troy (17) and Oklahoma (16) … Defensive tackle Derreck Dean recorded three tackles against K-State. That matched the true freshman’s total for the season.
