Football: McCoy Named Sun Belt Defensive POW
NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns sophomore linebacker Daylon McCoy was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday.
McCoy was a major defensive factor in the Cajuns 28-23 victory over Arkansas State. He led the Cajuns defense in holding the ninth-best rushing attack in the nation to only 100 yards – 146 yards below their season per-game average.
McCoy also made several game changing plays. He stopped an ASU drive in the first quarter at the Cajuns 20-yard line by recovering a fumble. Late in the fourth quarter, it was his sack on second-and-six that created a third-and-18, ultimately leading to a three-and-out. The Cajuns offense got the ball with 3:34 remaining and subsequently mounted the game-winning scoring drive. McCoy finished the game with seven tackles, two tackles-for-loss, one sack and a fumble recovery.
McCoy is the first Cajuns underclassmen to be named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
The Cajuns do not play this Saturday, returning to action on Nov. 1 versus Florida International. The homecoming game has been dubbed “Sellout the Swamp” to watch running back Tyrell Fenroy reach 1,000 rushing yards on the season in the University’s 1,000th football game.
Fenroy needs just 30 rushing yards to become only the seventh player in the NCAA football history to amass four 1,000-yard rushing seasons.
