Mark Brockhurst was the only Cajun golfer to shoot a round below par in the tournament.

KERRVILLE, Texas-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns opened the final round of the 2008 Roadrunner Intercollegiate in fifth place, 10-strokes back of the leader, but managed to cut the lead by seven strokes and finished the tournament in second place.

The Cajuns shot one over par as a team to finish the tournament three-strokes back of the champion Sam Houston State.  The second place finish marks the third time in five tournaments the Ragin’ Cajuns golf team finished in the top 5.

All five of the Louisiana golfers turned in excellent performances on the final day of competition with a pair of Cajuns closing out the tournament in the top 10.

Aside from the team finishing in the second position, senior Devin Carrey also finished the tournament in second place among all individuals.  Carrey started the day on a positive not by birdying his first hole of the day.  On his fourth hole of the day, Carrey moved to back to even par as he gave back a stroke with a bogey.  The senior played the next 11 holes at two over par, before birdying two of the final three holes to finish his round at even 72.

Fellow senior Dustin Petit also finished the tournament in the top 10.  The senior from Luling, turned in a two-over par round of 74 to finish the contest in a tie for seventh place.  Petit was even par on the back nine birdying hole ten and bogeying the 18th.

San Antonio native Kyle Pritchard was also solid in his final round of competition turning in a round of 73.  Pritchard shot two over par on the front nine, but shot a bogey free back nine, while adding a birdie on the 16th to finish the back nine at one under par.  His performance on the final day moved the junior into a tie for 31st.

Just one stroke back of Pritchard was Mark Brockhurst.  The junior was the only Cajun golfer to shoot a round below par in the tournament.  Brockhurst turned in a two-under par round of 70 on the final day to move into a tie for 35th.

The round tied the lowest of Brockhurst’s career that he set on Feb. 6, 2006 in the second round of the Rice Intercollegiate.  The round of 70 was the first sub-par round for the junior since the opening round of the 2007 Hal Sutton Classic on Apr. 2.

Rounding out the scoring for the Cajuns was freshman Philipp Fendt.  The rookie rebounded from a pair of high scores on opening day to card a three-over par 75 in the final round.  Fendt recorded four birdies on the day, which were second only to Brockhurst who had five.

The Ragin’ Cajuns golf team will return to action in February as they kick off the spring season with the Mardi Gras Invitational at the TPC in New Orleans.
