Spotlight on Former Athlete: Dr. Carter Lomax, Jr. Tennis 1974-76Carter Lomax, Jr. is living proof why in life, as in baseball, one is allowed three strikes. After two one-year tenures at Texas A&M and Central Texas Junior College, he settled in at USL, and the rest is tennis history. He set individual records for most wins in singles and doubles, was a conference Singles and Doubles Champion and Male Scholar Athlete for two years. According to Lomax, "When I was recruited by Jerel Simmons to play tennis for then USL, my first trip to Lafayette will never be forgotten. I met Skipper Hunt, who was also from Texas and is in the Hall of Fame as well. He enticed me with all the wonderful cuisine, Judge Roy Bean’s, the beautiful women, and the wonderful patrons that supported the tennis program. I felt like I had found a new family after the first visit. My decision seemed easy, though I had numerous other universities as options. I have never looked back and I know that the right decision was made." The hard work on academics for this student athlete paid hugh dividends as he attended the L.S.U. School of Medicine in Shreveport from 1977-81 and did his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Sinai Hospital of Detroit from 1981-85. He is now senior partner of OB-GYN P.C, a large specialty group and continues to practice obstetrics and gynecology. A giving person, he also instructs juniors in tennis – "one of the most rewarding things I do." His travel has increased because of his daughter’s enjoyment of such activities. Carter stated, "Her first question on returning from a trip is where are we going next. We have had to travel so much nationally for her tennis that now she enjoys the international travel most."
