Men’s Basketball: Lee Announces New Additions to Staff for 2009-10

LAFAYETTE – Nate Dixon and James Williams will join Robert Lee’s coaching staff at the University of Louisiana for the 2009-10 basketball season, it was announced on Wednesday. Their hiring is pending approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.

Both will begin their new post effective July 1, 2009.

Dixon comes to Louisiana after spending the past four seasons in the Sun Belt Conference – two seasons each at in-state rivals New Orleans (2007-08 and 2008-09) and ULM (2005-06 and 2006-07).

Williams brings international experience to the Cajuns’ staff, both as a player and coach. He played professionally in Portugal and Austria and later served as head coach of Basket Clubs of Vienna from 2002-07.

They replace Byron Starks and Jai Steadman who resigned to pursue other opportunities.

Dixon served as recruiting coordinator at UNO and ULM. He helped the Privateers land one of the largest recruiting classes in school history for 2008-09.

While in Monroe, he helped the Warhawks grab a share of the Sun Belt West Division title in 2006-07 and signed Tony Hooper (All-Sun Belt performer and CBS Southland Freshman of the Year) and Jonas Brown (2007 Louisiana Newcomer of the Year).

During the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons, Dixon worked under Billy Donovan at Florida handling various administrative duties. He was part of a coaching staff that landed one of the best recruiting classes in recent memory, as the Gators won back-to-back national championships.

Dixon also held previous assistant positions at Stetson (2001-03) and Division II members Queens (N.C.) University (1998-01) and Belmont Abbey (1997-98). He helped guide Queens to the Sweet 16 and Elite 8.

Dixon, who played three seasons at Gardner-Webb University, is a 1994 graduate of UNC Wilmington.

Williams played collegiately at Nicholls State, earned a bachelor’s degree there and served as a graduate assistant coach while Robert Lee was a member of the Colonels’ squad. Williams went on to play professionally on the international level in Portugal and later Austria.

His coaching career began in 2001 when he served as the assistant basketball director for the Hall of Fame Sports Camp in Montclair, N.J.

In 2002 he took over as head coach for Basket Clubs of Vienna in Austria – a team he played for – and remained in that capacity through 2007.

Williams has a history of developing programs for Youth. Most recently, in an assignment with Teamwork Basketball, he worked with national and international organizations to introduce Youth into basketball programs.
