Football: Fenroy and Smith Going North

Former Ragin’ Cajuns Tyrell Fenroy and Derrick Smith have agreed to contracts with the Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders.  Calgary went 13-5 last season en route to winning the 2008 Grey Cup.
Former Cajuns offensive tackle Jesse Newman was taken by Calgary with the third overall pick in the 2008 CFL Draft.
The defending champions reported for training camp on June 6.  Calgary took a 37-30 victory over the BC Lions in their first pre-season game on June 17.
“Smith is already there and Fenroy is trying to get his passport,” Louisiana head coach Rickey Bustle said.  “They want him to report as soon as possible.
“I think it will help them quickly adjust having a familiar face in the locker room (Newman).”
The Stampeders conclude their pre-season on Tuesday, June 23 at Saskatchewan.  The CFL begins its regular season on Wednesday, July 1.  Calgary hosts the Montreal Alouettes.
Fenroy originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the NFL’s Chicago Bears, but was unexpectedly released after his first rookie camp.  Smith was unable to land an NFL deal and signed directly with Calgary.
“Derrick and Tyrell are both talented football players and I wish them luck in the CFL,” Bustle added.  “I know they both dream to be in the NFL, so hopefully this is a small detour.”
