Football: Richardson spent summer with brother, Crimson Tide

Joshua Parrott • jparrott@theadvertiser.com • August 13, 2009

Instead of working out at UL over the summer, Terrell Richardson joined his brother, University of Alabama signee Trent Richardson, training with Crimson Tide players in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Richardson returned to Lafayette a few days before the start of fall camp carrying an extra 10 pounds. The junior defensive end, now up to 270 pounds, credits his weight gain to working out with Alabama strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran, a New Orleans native and LSU graduate.

"It was a good experience working out with the team, getting pushed by coach Cochran and doing stuff with those (Alabama) guys," Richardson said. "We did a lot of different drills, ran every day and took a lot of karate classes and Pilates classes. I learned a lot while I was there."

Richardson was sure to get permission from UL head coach Rickey Bustle before spending the summer in Tuscaloosa. In addition to improving for the 2009 season, the Florida native also got a chance to spend some quality time with his younger brother.

The younger Richardson, a prep All-American, is doing his best to make the adjustment to big-time college football.

"He’s doing pretty good," Richardson said. "I think he’s second-string right now. He’s just got to adjust to coaches yelling at him. He’s not really used to that. But he’s going to be all right. I think they’re going to give him a chance to prove himself."

Twice as nice

Wednesday marked the first two-a-day practice for the Cajuns.

The team had a two-hour morning workout focusing on fundamentals. In the afternoon, the players had a 90-minute practice followed by a short scrimmage that lasted about 25 minutes at Cajun Field.

"In the morning, we went back to the basics, worrying on our eyes, footwork and all that stuff," said defensive coordinator Kevin Fouquier. "In the afternoon I thought that the guys flew around well."

Fouquier’s only frustration in the scrimmage: A 70-yard pass play from quarterback Brad McGuire to tight end Luke Aubrey, who made a leaping catch over a smaller defender, broke a tackle and sprinted into the end zone.

"We’ve got to make that tackle," Fouquier said. "It’s only one play, but that one play can be the difference in a game."

Injury report

The team’s official injury report was released after Wednesday’s two workouts.

Three players – offensive lineman Evan Ruiz (back) and defensive ends Nate Douglas (unknown) and Justin Anderson (shoulder) – have yet to be cleared medically and are out indefinitely.

Offensive lineman Josh Robinson (shoulder) is out for Saturday’s scrimmage.

Running back Draylon Booker (groin), defensive tackle Tory Day (knee), defensive backs Winston Burnette (groin) and Seth Guilbeaux (head) and wide receivers Richie Falgout (back), Vernon Wolfe (hamstring) and Julian Troullier (knee) are probable for Saturday.

Four players – offensive lineman Ian Burks (head), defensive tackle Brandon McCray (ankle/toe), wide receiver Ross Goodlett (hamstring) and tight end Brandon Williams (ill) – are doubtful for the upcoming scrimmage.

Odds and Ends

UL will practice in shoulder pads and helmets (shells) today and Friday before a full scrimmage at 9 a.m. Saturday at Cajun Field … With Burks out, redshirt freshman Jaron Odom got plenty of action at right guard in the afternoon scrimmage … Two NFL scouts, Tampa Bay’s Brian Hudspeth and St. Louis’ Steve Kazor, watched the Cajuns in the afternoon workout … Lynn Bustle, the wife of UL head coach Rickey Bustle stopped by Cajun Field for the last half of Saturday’s scrimmage.
