NATCHITOCHES – Down go the champs. No. 1 Carencro, behind an unexpected approach, unseated four-time reigning state champion Edna Karr, 35-19, for the Class 4A state title Tuesday night at Harry Turpin Stadium. More:Carencro wins state championship with help from former legends The Bears (12-1) snapped a 28-year championship drought with their first state title since 1992. Known for its grinding ground game powered by Traylon Prejean and Kendrell Williams, the Bears took advantage of Karr anticipating the run as quarterback Tavion Faulk passed for 104 yards and a touchdown. Prejean also threw a touchdown to Jaylon John on a halfback pass that stretched 46 yards in the second quarter. Prejean had three total touchdowns. Carencro opening the passing game allowed both Prejean and Williams to find a rhythm as the game progressed. Williams amassed 139 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries while Prejean had 25 rushes for 115 yards. Despite a great performance from Edna Karr receiver Aaron Anderson, who scored all three of the Cougars’ touchdowns, the offense searched for another option but couldn’t fine a consistent one against the Bears’ defense. The Cougars (10-2) were just 3-11 on third-down conversions and had the ball for less than 15 minutes in the game.
