www.ragincajuns.com – Tyler Albrecht made his first collegiate field goal attempt one to remember. The junior from Destrehan converted a 48-yard field with 32 seconds remaining to lift Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns to a 17-15 victory over Kansas State Saturday evening at Cajun Field.

Albrecht’s heroics sealed the Ragin’ Cajuns (2-0) first win over a BCS conference school since Sept. 14, 1996 (Texas A&M).

The attendance of 16,431 set a new UL record for the first two home games of the season. Combined with attendance from the Southern game, 57,788 fans came to Cajun Field during the first two weeks of the season. The previous record of 57,030 was set in 1996 after games against Texas A&M and Houston.

Chris Masson completed 20-of-36 passes for 185 yards. Undrea Sails was Louisiana’s top rusher gaining 78 yards on 20 carries.

Marlin Miller and Luke Aubrey accounted for 12 of UL’s receptions – recording a game-high six apiece.

Kansas State was led by Daniel Thomas’ 136 rushing yards.

The Cajuns made a big mistake on the first offensive play of the game. On an end around, Andrew Joseph fumbled at the Cajun’s 21-yard line. But UL’s defense was able to hold on and force the Wildcats to attempt a 24-yard field goal. Jason Cherry pushed the kick to right and UL took over on downs.

The Cajuns were able to survive their first mistake when the Wildcats missed their field goal. In the middle of the first quarter on a productive drive, the Cajuns made another mistake as Sails coughed up the ball at the UL 41-yard line. The defense came up again for the Cajuns forcing the Wildcats to a three-and-out.

The third mistake of the day cost the Cajuns a couple of points. After a bad snap from the Cajuns’ 8-yard line, Masson was forced to run out the back of the end zone for a safety.

But Louisiana was able to regain the lead at the 9:37 mark in the second quarter. Sails was able to find the end zone on a 13-yard run, capping off a 7-play, 61-yard drive.

The Cajuns were able to get the ball back on K-State’s next possession after Grant Fleming forced a fumbled from Thomas’ hands and Chris Lanaux was able to recover the ball for UL at the Cajuns’ 27-yard line.

Masson’s first attempt after the recovery was deflected at the line and K-State’s John Houlik was able to come up with the interception at UL’s 24-yard line. But the Cajuns’ defense once again came to the rescue, holding the Wildcats to a 39-yard field goal attempt. But holder Ryan Doerr fumbled the snap on fourth down, turning the ball over to the Cajuns.

The defense proved itself again at the 2:19 mark in the second quarter when Maurice Rolle, Jr., was able to come up with his second career interception, thwarting the Wildcats drive. Lanaux was able to put pressure on K-State’s Carson Coffman, forcing an errant throw over the middle that sailed high, allowing Rolle to come away with the ball.

With 2:14 remaining in the first half, Louisiana’s offense did not waste the opportunity and the ensuing drive resulted with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Luke Aubrey by Masson with five seconds left in the half. On the 12-play, 73-yard drive, Masson was 5-for-7 for 55 yards.

At the half with a 14-2 lead, Louisiana had outgained the Wildcats, 193 yards to 131. K-State was 0-for-8 on third down conversions during the first half, thanks to a stout Cajun defense.

The Wildcats were able to come up with an 11-play, 67-yard drive that resulted in a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jeron Mastrud from Thomas at the 14:56 mark in the fourth quarter. That sliced the Cajuns lead in half to 14-8.

The Wildcats regained the lead, 15-14,  at the 8:08 mark in the fourth quarter after Thomas rushed for a 3-yard touchdown. For the second consecutive drive, the Wildcats marched down the field at will on a 14-play, 86-yard drive.

The Cajuns defense forced the Wildcats into a three-and-out on their next possession. That set up UL for the game-winning drive which started with 3:50 remaining in the contest.

Louisiana takes to the road for the first time next week as the squad travels 50 miles east on Interstate 10 for a meeting with LSU. Game time is set for 6 p.m., at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge. The contest will be aired live on ESPNU.
