Women’s Basketball: Cajuns Capture Win In Final Seconds – Cajuns Host Troy Sat.in Long Gym
Jasmine Barnes’ jump shot with 22.5 seconds remaining was all it took to lift Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns women’s basketball team over New Orleans, 47-44, on Wednesday night at Earl K. Long Gym.
The Cajuns are now 7-12 on the season and 2-5 in the Sun Belt. UNO falls to 7-12 and 1-7 in the league. The Cajuns jumped out to an early 18-9 lead at the 13:37 mark on some hot shooting. UL was a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor to start the first half. The Cajuns were still able to lead, 20-13, with 11:00 remaining despite missing their next six field goals attempts. The scoring drought continued until Jasmine Barnes made a fast break lay-up to give UL a 22-15 advantage with 8:18 left on the clock. UNO grabbed its first lead of the game late in the first half at 26-25 with 2:12 left. The Cajuns’ shooting went cold near the end of the first frame, failing to hit a field goal in the final 7:49 of the half. Louisiana snapped its scoreless streak when Mercedes Johnson converted a three-point play after hitting a jumper in the paint. Alexis Green would give the Cajuns lead on the next possession with a lay-up, 30-28, at the 16:35 mark. UNO would briefly take the lead back before Green drained a three-pointer to give the Cajuns a 36-34 edge at the 10:41 mark. The Cajuns would stretch the lead to as much as five points, 43-38, with 4:55 left in the game. Louisiana’s defense was able to hold the Lady Privateers to zero field goals for almost five minutes until UNO hit a jumper at the 4:48 mark with UL leading 43-40. But UNO would knot the score at 44-44 with 1:38 remaining. Both teams would trade possessions before Barnes would hit the baseline jumper as the shot clock expired to give UL a 46-44 lead with 22.5 seconds remaining. The Cajuns would force UNO into a hurried shot at the other end of the court. The Lady Privateers would get the offensive board but subsequently turn the ball over with 2.4 ticks left on the clock. A free throw by Amy Richard would seal the win for the Cajuns. Three Cajuns scored in double figures, led by Barnes with 14 points and five rebounds. Green added 12 and Johnson chipped in 11. Jamie Gunter had a team-high seven rebounds. Next on the Cajuns’ slate will be Troy on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT at Earl K. Long Gym. ![]()
