Volleyball: Haruguchi Joins Mazeitis’ Staffwww.ragincajuns.com – The University of Louisiana Athletics Department announced Wednesday the hiring of Jon Haruguchi as an assistant volleyball coach on Heather Mazeitis’ staff. His hiring is pending approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors. He replaces George Hagemaster who served as an assistant the previous two seasons. Haruguchi, who spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with the Southeastern Louisiana volleyball program, brings over 13 seasons of coaching experience with him. In addition to serving as recruiting coordinator of the Southeastern program, Haruguchi was responsible for video exchange, breakdown of film, managing of player’s academic progress and running of the Hammond Festival and summer camps. Haruguchi helped lead SLU to the Southland Conference Tournament – the Lions’ first appearance since 2002. A native of Honolulu, Haruguchi had tremendous success coaching in the Colorado club ranks with the Fort Collins-based organization, NORCO. He served two stints with the club (1997-2000 and 2004-2007) as both an assistant and as a head coach. In 2000, he worked as an assistant coach and helped the NORCO 18 Black team to a silver medal in the open division at the Junior National Championships Haruguchi also served for two seasons as the head girl’s coach at Poudre High School, in Fort Collins, Colo., where he took his team to the district tournament both seasons. Most recently Haruguchi served as the head coach of Louisiana Volleyball, a club team in Covington. In the 2009 season he guided his Louisiana Volleyball 18’s team to a fifth-place finish in the club division at the Junior National Championships, a first-place finish in the state and an overall record of 66-17. He has served as a camp clinician at SLU, University of Colorado, Colorado State University and University of Nebraska. Haruguchi received his bachelor’s degree from Colorado State in 1996 and was a member of the men’s club volleyball team from 1992-1996. He also was a volunteer assistant with CSU during the spring of 2000.
