Junior Gabriele Bridges’ 13th home run of the season put the Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team in the driver’s seat to capture its ninth-straight victory with a 6-3 win over Troy on Saturday.

With the win, Louisiana improves to 32-14 on the season. In the Sun Belt, the Cajuns have won their last eight games to stand at 13-3. Troy is now 23-24 overall and 9-10 in the league.

Bridges’ two-out, two-run towering home run came in the first inning. When the Cajuns are the first team to score, they have a record of 28-4.

UL led the fourth inning with a base hit by Kelly Cormier. Cormier would be the first out on a fielder’s choice by Nerissa Myers. A single and steal by Erikka Murphy put both runners in scoring position. Vallie Gaspard brought both runners home with her first double of the season to widen the Cajuns’ lead to 4-0.

Troy’s Ashlyn Williams loaded the bases for the Cajuns with three consecutive walks to start the fifth inning. But a poor base-running decision on a passed ball and back-to-back strikeouts denied UL a prime scoring opportunity.

After posting a hit in the first inning, Troy’s bats were shutdown by Donna Bourgeois. Then in the fifth inning, Troy recorded two, two-out hits. With runners on the corners, the Trojans attempted to pull of the double steal. One run was able to cross the plate before the final out was made on a rundown between first and second.

A two-out, RBI-single by Melissa Verde put the Cajuns back up by four runs in the top of the sixth inning.

The Trojans threatened to make a comeback in the bottom of the sixth frame. With two runners on base, a single up the middle by Courtney Cherry scored one run. An errant throw on the same play let Troy score an unearned run, cutting into the Cajuns’ lead 5-3.

UL bounced back with a chance to put some distance on the Trojans in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and one out on the board, a passed ball allowed Lana Bowers to score. But the Cajuns hit into a double-play to end the threat and the inning.

Bourgeois handcuffed Troy in the final at bat, allowing just one hit.

Bourgeois (17-8) struck out nine batters and walked two. She stands at a perfect 4-0 against the Trojans in her career.

Three Cajuns’ turned in multiple hit performances as UL scattered 10 hits on the afternoon. Verde, Cormier and Myers had two hits each. Gaspard had a hit and two RBI to bring her current hitting streak to 13 games.

UL and Troy will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11:30 a.m. CST. The first game will be televised live on CSS/CST. Game two will be shown on CSS/CST in tape delay at 4:30 p.m. CT.
