Baseball: Cajuns over Le Moyne, 8-5 – claims third consecutive serieswww.ragincajuns.com – Louisiana scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come-from-behind and defeat Le Moyne 8-5 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
With the win, the Ragin’ Cajuns (25-15) collected their third consecutive weekend series victory and picked up their 11th victory in the past 12 games.
Trailing 4-3, Alex Fuselier led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to right field and moved up on a passed ball. Tyler Frederick singled to center field to score Fuselier and pull the Cajuns into a 4-all tie.
Frederick stole second base and would score the go-ahead run when a throw to first on a potential double-play ball hit by Greg Fontenot sailed into the Le Moyne dugout.
Three consecutive two-out hits – beginning with a Kyle Olasin double down the right field line – led to three additional runs for the Cajuns upping the lead to 8-4.
Joey Satriano, working his second full inning in relief of Cajuns starter T.J. Geith, worked out of a runners on second and third with no outs jam to allow only one additional run for the Dolphins (22-23) and lock down the win.
UL returns to action on Tuesday, April 27 in New Orleans against Tulane at Turchin Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Next weekend the Cajuns host Middle Tennessee in a key Sun Belt Conference series at “The Tigue”.
Matt Goulas picked up his second home run of the season and tallied a game-high three RBI for the Cajuns. Frederick, Goulas and Olasin each scored two runs.
Geith pitched 6 2/3 innings for Louisiana, scattering seven hits and allowing only two earned runs.
Fontenot went 2-for-4 at the plate to finish the series 5-for-9. He raised his batting average to a team-high .361 – his highest mark of the season.
Luke Nellis, who relieved Le Moyne starting pitcher Mark Kumza in the seventh inning, gave up the hit to Frederick in the eighth which tied the game and was responsible for Frederick’s run that scored on a throw that went into the dugout.
Geith and Kuzma each stranded a runner at third base and held the opposition to one hit over the first two innings.
Le Moyne scored first when Brett Botsford reached on a one-out single and came around to score on a groundout by Matt Marra in the top of the third inning. The Ragin’ Cajuns answered in the bottom of the inning getting a two-run home run from Goulas.
After the Dolphins drew even in the top of the fourth, the Cajuns came back in the bottom half to regain their lead. Frederick singled then Dillon Guillory was hit by a pitch. Fontenot singled back up the middle to score Frederick for a 3-2 lead.
Similar to Saturday’s game, Le Moyne plated a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning. Marra led off and reached on a fielding error by Fontenot. He later scored on a double to left center by Brian Stinson. A wild pitch by Geith two at bats later would allow Stinson to score and break the 3-all tie.
BASES NOTED: With Sunday’s performance, T.J. Geith lowered his season ERA to 4.95…Now every Cajuns pitcher on the roster has an ERA below 5.00…Since April 2, Greg Fontenot has raised his season average from .289 to .361. This was the second all-time weekend series meeting between UL and Le Moyne…The programs met in March 2005 with the Cajuns taking two-of-three…UL now leads the all-time series 4-2.
