Golf: Noto Runner-Up at LGA Championship
Ragin’ Cajuns Andrew Noto totaled 11-under par (273) en route to a runner-up finish at the 91st Louisiana Golf Association Amateur Championship at Koasati Pines at Coushatta in Kinder. Noto birdied three of the final five holes during Sunday’s final round to fire a four-under par 32 on the back, but it wasn’t quite enough, as former-UNO golfer Ken Looper protected his lead to win by three strokes (-14, 270). Noto was the tournament leader after two rounds when he fired a five-under par 66 on Friday to take a one-shot lead over Looper. Looper, who was the runner-up at the 2009 LGA Championship, had the day’s best round, a six-under par 65, including five consecutive birdies on holes 4-8. Looper shot a three-under par 68 on Saturday to take a three-shot lead over Noto, who shot a one-over 72. "I can’t say enough good things about how great Andrew played," Ragin’ Cajuns head golf coach Theo Sliman said. "His 66 on Friday was remarkable and he gave himself a chance to win with a 32 over the final nine. "It just wasn’t enough, but I know he has learned a great deal from this experience and it will help him mature as a golfer." Several other Cajuns had strong showings, including redshirt freshman Kelsey Angelle (5, 289) who finished tied for 19th. Soon-to-be seniors Seth Dufresne (9, 293 – T-39th) and Thomas Petts (13, 297 – T-51st) both carded their best round on the final day, a one-over 72. Signee Tyler Ledet (17, 301 – T-60th) and redshirt freshman Ashton Abel (19, 303 – T-63rd) each posted their best 18 holes in round one, a one-over 72.
