Facing first and 10 from the Arkansas State 47 late in the second quarter, receiver Javone Lawson took the pitch from quarterback Chris Masson and fired the ball downfield to Andrew "Rico" Joseph for the 47-yard touchdown. Lawson filled the role normally held by senior receiver Richie Falgout, who has been nursing a sore shoulder. "I was watching him the other day in practice, and I noticed that Javon could throw the football," UL coach Rickey Bustle said. "They put him back there, and he threw a strike down the field." Lawson, a sophomore from Harvey, also caught one pass for nine yards. Falgout still holds the NCAA Tough turnoutThe announced crowd for Saturday’s game in the afternoon heat was 15,103. It was the smallest crowd to attend a Cajun home opener since a crowd of 15,605 showed up to watch UL beat North Carolina A&T, 48-7, on Sept. 23, 2006. Pass happyArkansas State quarterback Ryan Aplin tied the Cajun Field record for most passing yards by an opponent with 438 yards. Junior tailback Kevis Streeter hurt his right hamstring on the same play and was on the sideline in street clothes for the second half. After putting a protective sleeve on his left knee, Masson returned later in the drive and threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ladarius Green. High tight end/defensive end Mykhael Quave, the younger brother of UL freshman offensive lineman Daniel Quave, was one of the recruits that attended Saturday’s game. The younger Quave is rated the nation’s No. 97 tight end by ESPN.com. He currently holds offers from the Cajuns, Southern Miss and UL Monroe with Ole Miss, Mississippi State and South Alabama also showing interest.
