Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 29, 2010 at a 10:00 AM Mass at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Lafayette, for Steve Brackin, age 70, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 2:15 AM at his residence in Lafayette.
Reverend Monsignor J. Douglas Courville, JCL, Pastor of St. Martin De Tours Catholic Church in St. Martinville, Louisiana, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Giftbearers will be Lisbeth Guilbeau, Joan Judycki and Chantel Raggio. Lectors are Kathleen Godchaux and Gene Brackin. Jodi Bollich, organist will sing for the services, "Ave Maria", "Amazing Grace", "Battle Hymn of the Republic", and "Here I Am, Lord".
Survivors include his children, Kristine Brackin Brogdon and her husband, Kirk Brogdon and Kirk Arnold Brackin and his wife, Sadie Frederick Brackin; his grandchildren, Lila Rose and Isaac Jude Brackin; his sisters, Jeanne Mouton and her husband, Kenneth, Patricia Mouton and her husband, M.J.; a brother, Gene Brackin and his wife, Becky; a dear friend, Juanita Deshotels; sisters-in-law, Vera Deville and her husband, Frank Judycki, Kathleen Deville and her husband, Dr. James Godchaux and Betty Deville and her husband, Jim Linke; nieces and nephews, Leanne Mouton, Lynne Gautreaux, Lisbeth Guilbeau, Chantel Raggio, Blaine Brackin, Jaik, Jedd, and Tait Faulk, Anne Chambers, Joan Judycki, Dr. Jay, John, Jeff and Josh Godchaux and many grand nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, A.J. and Tennys Brackin; his wife, Christine Deville Brackin on August 16, 2005; one son, Kyle Jude Brackin in 1998; paternal grandparents, Travis Arnold Brackin and Mary Peltier; and maternal grandparents, Dennis Blanchard and Jeanne Alexander Blanchard.
Born on November 6, 1939, Mr. Brackin was a native of Scott, Louisiana and a resident of Lafayette for most of his life. Steve attended Scott High School and graduated from Cathedral High School. He graduated from USL (ULL) with a Master of Education in 1968. Mr. Brackin was the first USL freshman to make the All GSC first team, earning the honor as a utility infielder in 1958. He then repeated in the outfield in 1959 and 1960. In 1960 he batted .514 in GSC games only, an all-time record. He was inducted in ULL Baseball Hall of Fame November 12, 1977. After his college career was over, he signed with the Washington Senators pro baseball team, playing in their farm system for several years.
Mr. Brackin began his coaching career in Ville Platte, Louisiana (Sacred Heart) in 1962 and also coached at ArchBishop Rummel in New Orleans, USL (graduate assistant) and Cathedral Carmel. He was a former Guidance Counselor at Lafayette High, physical education instructor at Paul Breaux Elementary, instructor with SEAS-Special Education Alternative Site, and the Adult Education Program.
Pallbearers will be Daniel Breakfield, Kevin Guilbeau, Jedd Faulk, Tait Faulk, Chris Raggio, Dr. Jay Godchaux, John Godchaux, Jeff Godchaux, Josh Godchaux and Jaik Faulk.
The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille’s SOUTHSIDE location on Thursday from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Friday from 8:00 AM
until time of service.
A Rosary will be prayed Thursday at 7:00 PM in Martin & Castille Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: A.J. Brackin and Sidney Bowles 4-H Club Scholarship Fund in c/o LSU Agriculture Center, 1010 Lafayette Street, Lafayette, Louisiana 70501.
The Brackin family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to Dr. Chancellor Donald and Louisiana Oncology Associates’ staff, Hospice of Acadiana, and the many friends and family for their kindness and care.

Ed just a note to you to let you know that Steve Brackin passed away at 2 am 10/26/10. Steve as you know was in the UL Athletic HALL OF FAME. Funeral arrangements are pending.
