Football: Ortego Named Ray Guy CandidateLouisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns punter Spencer Ortego has been named as a candidate for the 2010 Ray Guy Award as announced by Augusta Sports Council today. Ortego was a 2009 First Team All-Sun Belt punter and was also named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt team prior to this season. Thus far in 2010, the senior has punted 46 times with a 40.3 yard average per punt. The Carencro native has a long of 55 yards and has booted nine kicks of over 50 yards. He has also pinned UL’s opponents inside the 20-yard line on nine different occasions. The Ray Guy Award is award to the nation’s top collegiate punter every year. The Greater Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia-native and College Football Hall of Fame inductee Ray Guy. The award winner is determined by a national voting body of sports writers, college coaches, sports information directors, and past Ray Guy Award winners. The list of 51 candidates will be narrowed to ten semifinalists on November 12, then to three finalists on November 22. The presentation of the Ray Guy Award will be featured on The Home Depot College Football Awards live on Thursday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
