The difference? Lamar made the free throws he needed to make at the end and Green missed, keeping the Cajuns perfect at home en route to the Southland crown and a subsequent NCAA Tournament bid.

Feb. 25, 1971

Fans knew to expect fireworks. Earlier in the season, Northeast (now UL Monroe) held off the high-flying Cajuns 100-98 in Monroe. This time, it was time for national scoring champion Bo Lamar to save the day with a school-record 62 points that helped the Cajuns gain a season split.

The score for the two games combined — Cajuns 205, Northeast 204.

Three days earlier, the Cajuns survived a slowdown strategy at Northwestern State, winning 25-21.

3. Cajuns 74, UAB 72

March 6, 1980

NIT

It’s hard to overstate the impact of the Cajuns’ win in their first postseason appearance since sanctions wiped out the program for two years. It’s also hard to fire a shot from farther away in the corner than Dion Rainey did for the game-winner, falling into the bench area for what today would be a deep 3-pointer.

4. Cajuns 88, Lamar 84

Feb. 17, 1979

The Cajuns had been embarrassed in Beaumont by a 92-73 count earlier in the year, and the anticipation was sky-high for the rematch with Mike Oliver and the Cardinals. This one belonged to UL as coach Bobby Paschal began to assert his reign.

5. Cajuns 87,

Oklahoma 83

March 20, 1992

NCAA West Regional,

Coach Marty Fletcher’s squad was coming off a thrilling run through the Sun Belt Tournament in Biloxi that featured wins over New Orleans (73-69, overtime), UALR (64-61) and La. Tech (75-71), but they were still underdogs against the Sooners.

UL turned the tables, though, in what remains the last NCAA Tournament win at the school.

In those days, the fire marshall looked the other way as fans overflowed the arena, and it was no different with conference honors at stake.

The difference? Lamar made the free throws he needed to make at the end and Green missed, keeping the Cajuns perfect at home en route to the Southland crown and a subsequent NCAA Tournament bid.

Nov. 27, 1981

Great Alaska Shootout

All the attention was on freshman sensation Patrick Ewing, but the Cajuns knocked off the Hoyas to send a buzz through the Great Alaska Shootout. That buzz became a roar as UL then topped Washington State and Marquette to come home with the tournament crown.

They would end the season as Southland Conference champions in the NCAA Tournament.

W. Kentucky 72

March 8, 1994

SBC Tournament Finals

WKU fans settling into E.A. Diddle Arena figured the Sun Belt title was in the bag. The Hilltoppers had swept two regular season meetings with the Cajuns — 91-87 at Diddle and 78-62 at the Cajundome — and one more would clinch the crown.

But senior Cajun guard Michael Allen had other plans, and the Tournament MVP willed the Cajuns to a landmark victory and NCAA Tournament bid.

Weber State 72, 2 OT

March 19, 1984

NIT

The Cajuns, who had left the Southland Conference to go independent in 1982-83, used postseason pedigree to get an NIT bid despite losing their season finale to McNeese. They won 94-92 at Utah State, then returned to Blackham Coliseum for what turned out to be a true classic.

UL won the battle of wills and used that momentum to thrash Santa Clara three nights later to reach the NIT Final Four.

9. Cajuns 102,

Houston 89

March 10, 1973

Earning a second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Cajuns were pitted against the Houston Cougars at the Midwest Regional in Wichita, Kan. For the 13th time that season, coach Beryl Shipley’s team exceeded 100 points to advance.

It would be 9 years before the Cajuns would be invited back to the NCAA Tournament.

10. Cajuns 116, Kentucky 113, OT

Dec. 23, 1989

Kentucky Invitational

Star players like Kevin Brooks grabbed the attention, but St. Martinville’s Tyrone Jones hit the shot that toppled the homestanding Wildcats at their own holiday season tournament. The Cajuns had nipped Cincinnati in their opener, 89-88, on a Todd Hill game-winner to set up the apparent mismatch.

Long Beach St. 83

Dec. 11, 1972

Bo Lamar and Ed Ratleff went to the same high school. Ratleff was the major recruiting catch, going to Long Beach State. The smaller Lamar was lightly regarded and landed with the Cajuns. The Bayou Classic finals put them on the same court one more time, with Lamar emerging triumphant, earning the Cajuns major national respect.

Cajuns 103,

Houston 102, OT

Jan. 13, 1988

Earl "The Pearl" Watkins hit what has become a legendary

3-point bomb at the buzzer to beat the Cougars at the Cajundome. The shot was easily a 30-footer. Coach Marty Fletcher said, "We call that play Victory." Watkins, on the other hand, admitted he thought the Cajuns were leading when he launched what he deemed a throwaway game-ender.

Cajuns 65,

Florida 64

March 14, 1985

The Cajuns had lost five in a row to end the regular season to finish 16-13, but surprisingly got an NIT bid anyway. They then sent Blackham Coliseum out in style with a thrilling 65-64 win over Florida, which was led by the dynamic backcourt of Andrew Moten and Vernon Maxwel. Cedric Hill led the Cajuns with 22 points in the win.
