1972-73

Beryl Shipley, 24-5

The apex of the Shipley era at UL, before sanctions closed the program down for two years. A star-studded lineup that included Bo Lamar, Roy Ebron, Fred Saunders and Larry Fogle was a perfect 13-0 at home, scored over 100 points 13 times, won the Southland Conference at 12-0 and was ranked in the Top 5 in the nation.

The Cajuns defeated Houston 102-89 to open NCAA Tournament play, before losing to Kansas State 66-63 and South Carolina 90-85 to close the year.

1971-72

Beryl Shipley, 25-4

Sparked by national scoring champion Bo Lamar (36.3 points per game), the Cajuns surpassed 100 points 13 times and went unbeaten in the Southland Conference.

The NCAA Tournament opener featured a matchup with Marshall in Las Cruces, N.M., and the high-flying Cajuns outscored the Thundering Herd 112-101 to advance. An 88-84 loss to Louisville derailed the dream, but UL then whipped Texas 100-70 in a consolation game.

1970-71

Beryl Shipley, 25-4

Bo Lamar led the nation’s College Division in scoring at 36.0 points per game, and the Cajuns reached the NCAA College Tournament in Evansville, Ill., before losing to Evansville. A 105-83 consolation win over Kentucky Wesleyan was UL’s 11th game over 100 points.

1991-92

21-11

Marty Fletcher

Fletcher’s Cajuns won the Sun Belt Conference regular season title, then backed that up by winning the SBC Tournament in Biloxi with a clinching 75-71 win over rival La. Tech. They then advanced to the NCAA Tournament West Regional and upset Oklahoma 87-83 before being ousted by New Mexico State.

1981-82

24-8

Bobby Paschal

Any year that starts with a win over Patrick Ewing and Georgetown had promise. The Cajuns defeated Georgetown, Washington State and Marquette to win the Great Alaska Shootout and used that as a springboard for a Southland Conference title and UL’s first NCAA Tournament bid in 9 years. The Cajuns lost 61-57 to Tennessee, but were back in NCAA action.

1979-80

21-9

Bobby Paschal

Star guard Andrew Toney showed the way back to national acclaim as the Cajuns reached the quarterfinals of the NIT with wins over UAB (74-72) and at Texas (77-76) before falling at Minnesota. Toney averaged a career-best 26.1 points per game.

1983-84

23-10

Bobby Paschal

Suddenly, postseason was getting to be a habit. After an NIT berth in 1979-80 and the NCAA in 1981-82 and 1982-83, UL returned to the NIT and made it to the Final Four in Madison Square Garden in New York City with wins over Utah State, Weber State and Santa Clara, before losses to Notre Dame and Va. Tech.

1993-94

22-8

Marty Fletcher

The Cajuns hit high gear with a 91-51 thrashing of La. Tech in the regular season finale, then won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Bowling Green with a classic 78-72 victory over host Western Kentucky in the championship game behind Michael Allen to earn an NCAA Tournament berth.

1999-2000

25-9

Jessie Evans

Inside force Lonnie Thomas showed the way as Evans returned the Cajuns to NCAA Tournament action. The Cajuns held off South Alabama 51-50 in Little Rock to win the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, before falling to Tennessee 63-58 in the NCAA Tournament.

1964-65

20-10

Beryl Shipley

Senior Dean Church earned All-Gulf States Conference acclaim as he led the Cajuns to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, the first time on the national stage for the program. UL won the NAIA Regional at home to advance.
