A stellar relief effort and complete game shutout have landed Louisiana’s Taylor Hubbell Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon. Hubbell picked up two victories, one in relief and the other in a start, for the Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team (5-3) in the season’s second week. Hubbell tossed 8 2/3 innings of relief on Tuesday against Nicholls State holding the Colonels to one run on seven hits as UL rallied for a 5-4 victory. Hubbell entered the Nicholls game with only one out recorded in the first inning and the Colonels already having scored three runs. He ended the uprising and pitched the remainder of the game. On Sunday, Hubbell tossed a complete game shutout of Siena scattering seven hits and forcing 15 ground ball outs in a 1-0 victory. Hubbell allowed the Saints leadoff hitter to reach just once in nine innings and held Siena to a 0-for-6 showing with runners in scoring position. Hubbell’s workload for the week totaled 17 2/3 innings and a pair of 100-plus pitch outings (117 vs. Nicholls, then 124 vs. Siena). He allowed just one run and recorded a 0.51 ERA. Hubbell picked up his first career SBC Pitcher of the Week accolade. Louisiana has had at least one pitcher earn weekly honors in each of the past four seasons. The Ragin’ Cajuns return to action on Tuesday hosting Southern in a midweek game at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at 6 p.m. Then the club embarks on a season-long, eight game road trip starting Friday-Sunday, March 4-6 in Hattiesburg, Miss., against Southern Miss.
