Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns suited up in full pads for the first time this spring on Sunday afternoon. UL returns to the practice field on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns football team utilized full pads for the first time in the third of 15 scheduled practices this spring. The Cajuns completed 25 five-minute periods outside at the practice field on Sunday afternoon.

First year head coach Mark Hudspeth noted suiting up in full gear helps the coaches evaluate the players more effectively.

"When you put on pads, it exposes some people," said Hudspeth. "(Wearing pads) showed us today a little more of who can make plays in space. It shows who is physical, good getting off blocks and good at tackling. I think we were able to evaluate some players."

After another solid practice, the Cajuns will hit the film room the next two days to improve their technique.

"We will go back and study some film the next two days," said Hudspeth. "It was good to see some guys trying to get physical. That’s what we are trying to do in pads. We are trying to get tougher."

81 of 91 players participated in Sunday’s drills. The Ragin’ Cajuns will continue spring practice on Wednesday, March 16 at 3 p.m.

Practices are open to the media, RCAF members, current UL students and former football lettermen.  If rain or lightning forces the team inside the Leon Moncla Indoor Practice Facility, then spring practice will be closed to everyone except the media.

The schedule will be every Friday, Sunday and Wednesday until the Annual Spring Game at Cajun Field on Saturday, April 9 at 5 p.m.

A new feature to this year’s spring game will be the addition of regular season game activities and atmosphere.  All reserved tailgating spaces will be held until 10 a.m. Saturday morning for those who purchased their tailgating space during the 2010 season.  All unused spaces will open on a first-come, first-serve basis shortly after 10 a.m.  The athletic department is sponsoring a pre-game band which will start at 3 p.m.  The team will take the Cajun Walk led by the band and cheerleaders.  There will also be a ‘Kid Zone’ inside Cajun Field.

Admission for the 2011 Spring Game is $5.  All proceeds will be invested in the Ragin’ Cajuns Athletic Foundation.  Current UL students (with a valid ID) and fans under 12 are free.
