University of Louisiana sophomore Albert Fournette was named the Sun Belt Conference’s Field Athlete of the Week for April 19, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Fournette set a UL school record in the shot put with a distance of 57-7 ¾ (17.57m) at the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational on Saturday, April 16. The Saline, La., native broke a 26-year old record of 57-7 set by Robert Sippio on May 5, 1985.

Currently, Fournette’s mark is 18th in the NCAA East Region and ranks 36th nationally.

His mark, along with two other Ragin’ Cajuns teammates leads the Sun Belt Conference. Fournette’s throw of 57-7 ¾ is four inches better than Jacob Domingue’s distance of 57-3 ½ (17.46m).  UL sophomore Myles Melancon is third in the league with a throw of 57-2 ¾ (17.44m).

Fournette is the third Ragin’ Cajuns track & field athlete to earn a weekly honor during the outdoor campaign. Jasmine Manuel and O’Daylon Thibeaux were named Sun Belt men and women’s Field Athletes of the Week on April 12.

The Ragin’ Cajuns return to action this weekend at the LSU Alumni Gold meet on Saturday, April 23.
