University of Louisiana rising senior Philipp Fendt was named to the PING All-Central Region Team, an honor bestowed by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Fendt, a three-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection, is the first Ragin’ Cajuns golfer to earn all-region honors under the direction of head coach Theo Sliman. The selection adds to his 2011 season accolades which includes All-Sun Belt Conference and All-Louisiana honors. A total of 152 players across six regions – Northeast, East, Southeast, Midwest, Central and West – earned all-region honors for 2011. Fendt joins Jason Millard of Middle Tennessee (All-Southeast) and Carlos Ortiz of North Texas (All-Central) as the only three players from the Sun Belt Conference to receive all-region honors. "This is a huge honor for Philipp (Fendt) and our program," Sliman said. "It’s a true testament of his hard work and determination. "He moves a step closer toward reaching his personal goals, one of which is leaving the University as an All-American." All-American selections will be release following the completion of the NCAA Championships currently being held at Karsten Creek Stillwater, Okla., through Sunday, June 5. Fendt seeks to become UL’s first All-American since 2001 (Richard Ainley). Fendt averaged 72.16 strokes over 32 rounds this past season. His scoring average ranked among the Top 10 in the Sun Belt Conference. He posted five Top 10 finishes on the year and had 10 Top 25 showings. At the Oak Hills Invitational, the Austrian native tied his career best finish after tying for third place. He earned his spot on the All-Sun Belt Golf Team after finishing in a tie for 8th place at the SBC Championships. Fendt concluded his junior campaign at the NCAA Southeast Florida Regional in Ocala, Fla. He posted four birdies thru the last five holes to jump 15 spots up the leaderboard and wound up finishing 21st at one-under (215). "Philipp’s play has demonstrated a strong level of consistent play," Sliman mentioned. "This is an award that he will be able to draw upon during his senior year as well as the years to come."
