Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns senior linebacker Lance Kelley was named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday. Kelley notched a game-high eight tackles, a tackle-for-loss, a fumble recovery, a pass-break-up and an interception helping lead the Cajuns to a 30-10 victory over North Texas.

This is the fifth straight week a Cajuns player received weekly SBC honors and sixth time this season a Cajuns player was honored by the league.

Kelley picked up his second SBC Defensive Player of the Week honor, previously receiving the honor on Oct. 3 following the Florida Atlantic contest.

He also received honors from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, being named LSWA Co-Defensive Player of Week.

With the Mean Green trailing just 13-10 in the second quarter and driving to the Cajuns 28-yard line, Kelley recovered a Lance Dunbar fumble to end the scoring threat. His fourth quarter interception at the North Texas 42-yard line was returned to the 31-yard line and set-up a Cajuns touchdown that pushed a 10-point lead to 17 points with 8:55 remaining in the game.

Kelley and the Cajuns defense shutout the Mean Green in the second half, allowing just 108 yards of total offense over the final two quarters (60 of which occurred on NT’s final drive of the game in the final 44 seconds). Dunbar, the SBC’s third leading rusher was held to 53 yards on 19 carries (2.8ypc).

The Cajuns have now won six consecutive games, setting the Sun Belt Conference record for the best start to begin a season at 6-1 (only loss is to No. 6 Oklahoma State).
