Boxing: Louisiana’s Forgotten Sport, history of high school and college boxing" by Don Landry, 1960

The history of Southwestern Louisiana Institute’s (ULL) intercollegiate boxing program is one of the features in a new book, "Boxing: Louisiana’s Forgotten Sport, history of high school and college boxing."
Don Landry, a 1960 USL graduate and former basketball coach and athletic director at Nicholls State University, is the author of the publication.
Southwestern was one of eight colleges that sponsored boxing in the state.  Other colleges that competed were: LSU, Tulane, Loyola, Louisiana Tech, Centenary, Northeast Jr. College and McNeese Jr. College.
SLI developed a national power in the sport.  Under Coach George "Gee" Mitchell, Southwestern had three NCAA top three finishes and also produced individual national champions, Louis Campbell and Donald Harper.
"Boxing: Louisiana’s Forgotten Sport" chronicles the history of high school boxing from 1931 to 1958 and college boxing from 1929 to 1956.  The state high school boxing tournament was held in Lafayette’s Blackham Colisuem in 1950-58.
The book may be purchased by contacting Landry at werback@cox.net or 836 Highland Knoll Ct., Baton Rouge, La. 70810.
