A total of 13 teams and 82 individuals from the states of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi competed during the event. The Cajuns went up against five SEC schools ranked Top 60 in the country and the best NCAA Division I teams from the three states.
Yanick Mandl advanced the furthest of any Cajun in the singles main draw, reaching the Round of 16. Along the way he defeated Inaki Belloso of Southern Miss 6-3, 6-4 and rallied for victory over LSU’s Stefan Szacinski 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Mandl bowed out the event with a straight sets loss to Mississippi State’s Malte Stropp.
Carlin Murray made it to the Round of 32 before Stropp also ended his run. Murray notched an impressive 6-2, 6-0 win over LSU’ Thom Knights prior to facing Stropp.
In doubles play Ted Nilsson and Carl Alberton advanced to the Round of 16 before being eliminated by the top seeded tandem of Stropp and Louis Cant of Mississippi State.
"This was a competitive field that our players put it on the line against," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "We had some close matches that didn’t go our way, but hopefully we will learn from the experience and be able to focus mentally on the vital points."
The Ragin’ Cajuns close out the fall portion of the 2011-12 schedule in Pensacola, Fla., November 4-6 participating in the USTA Futures Event. This event will highlight players competing from around the world against the Cajuns which will give them vital international experience.
