Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns freshman running back Alonzo Harris was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week and senior cornerback Melvin White was named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Harris helped guide the Ragin’ Cajuns offense to a season-best 45 points in the win over Middle Tennessee rushing for a career-best 189 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 5.7 yards per carry. White posted his first multi-takeaway contest of the season and had seven tackles, all solo, in the Cajuns seventh win of 2011.

Harris’ 189 yards marked the third most by a freshman running back in school history, and was two yards more than the highest team game-high prior to Saturday night (187 at FIU). Harris became the first Cajuns running back to post a 100-yard game since 2009 after tallying 140 yards by halftime.

White helped spark the offense early as he came up with a big interception in the first quarter. The Cajuns then scored on the ensuing drive to take the lead 7-0. Later in the first half, White posted his first fumble recovery of the season. With MT driving deep in UL territory and the score 14-0, White scooped up a Tavarres Jefferson fumble at the UL nine-yard line to end the threat.

This week’s honors increase the number of weekly SBC honors for the Cajuns this season to eight. It’s the second time the Cajuns had multiple honorees (Lance Kelley & Brett Baer on Oct. 3 following FAU game).
