Track & Field: Jones Shines For Cajuns at Cole-Lancon Invitational – hosts SBC Meet May 11-13

Jones Shines For Cajuns at Cole-Lancon Invitational

Contact: Matt Hebert

LAFAYETTE, La. – Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns track and field team had a good showing in their final meet of the regular season posting several good performances at the Cole-Lancon Invitational on Saturday in preparation for the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Championships.

Topping the performances for the Cajuns was Justin Jones whose personal-best time of 10.43 in the 100-meter dash is the third fastest time in the Sun Belt this year. Jones then recorded the eighth fastest SBC time in the 200-meter dash running a time of 21.38.

“The guys competed really well today,” head coach Lon Badeaux said. “This is a small meet, but there was some pretty good talent. We did take the chance to rest a few people so the results are a little spotty, but overall it was a really good effort today.

“As a team, we were really just looking for consistency as we get closer to conference. Justin really showed that running a 10.40 today. It’s really exciting to see our athletes get to that level of consistency.

In the women’s 400-meter dash, Amanda Roberts finished first with a time of 56.04. Her time is the ninth fastest in the Sun Belt this year.

Michael Vani also had a good day posting a personal record of 17-1 in the pole vault to finish second behind Chris Roy who had a mark of 17-5.

“We had a few breakthroughs today,” Badeaux said. “Mike Vani jumped over 17 feet for the first time in his life, and Justin Jones had a really good day. We’ve been getting our multis guys a lot of work in all the meets this year, but Sander Maes had a pretty good day. He had a couple personal records, and we know he is outstanding. Hopefully he come out and have the same kind of performance in the actual multi next week.”
