Softball: Orgeron, Myers and Smith Tabbed NFCA All-AmericansLAFAYETTE, La. – After an unbelievable season that saw several records broken and the team posted a 53-6 record, Ragin’ Cajuns softball standouts Christi Orgeron, Nerissa Myers and Katie Smith were named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America teams, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced on Wednesday.
Orgeron, an All-America third team selection in 2011, was recognized on the first team after leading the country in RBI for the second consecutive season with 94. The New Orleans, La. native is the first player to represent the Ragin’ Cajuns on the first team since Holly Tankersley in 2008. Myers and Smith were both named to the third team, giving the Cajuns their most All-America selections since 1995, when they had six, and ties for the third most selections in the 32-year program history. Orgeron, the Sun Belt Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons, was a finalist for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. She is also one of 10 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, which will be announced during the Women’s College World Series, held May 31-June 6. The outfielder finishes her career at UL as the all-time RBI leader with 288, ranking her sixth in NCAA history. She ranked seventh in the country in home runs with 22 on the year and posted a .351 batting average. Her 70 career long balls are good for third in Ragin’ Cajun’s softball history. Orgeron also hit six grand slams this year and had nine in her career, both of which tied NCAA records. Myers led the nation with a UL and Sun Belt Conference record 83 runs scored, marking the 11th most runs in a single season in NCAA history. The Petal, Miss. native ranked third nationally in RBI, driving in 79 runs on the year. She also led the team in on base percentage (.513), was second in home runs (12) and finished third in batting average (.391). The junior was an All-SBC first team selection and contributed to the Cajun’s NCAA record 12 grand slams this season by connecting on four, tying her for the third most in a single season in NCAA history. Smith joins Myers on the third team after a season where she set the UL single season mark in batting average after hitting .447 as a senior. The Ruston, La. native hit safely in 52-of-57 games and strung together hit streaks of 18 and 14, before ending the season on a 13-game streak. The first team All-Sun Belt member recorded the second most hits in league history with 88 and finished third on the SBC career list with 259, while her 90 career stolen bases rank her third on the UL career charts. With the three All-America selections, UL now has 42 in the program’s history and 14 under the direction of co-head coaches Stefni and Michael Lotief. The Cajuns finished the season as the nation’s top offensive team for the second consecutive year, scoring 461 runs and averaging 7.81 per game. Louisiana hosted their first regional since 2002, knocking off Stanford in the title game, before falling to Arizona State in the third game of the best of three series in the Tempe Super Regional. –Ragin’ Cajuns– — Cory Weigel
