Softball: Orgeron Selected to USA National Team

LAFAYETTE, La. – For the second consecutive year, Ragin’ Cajuns outfielder Christi Orgeron was selected to the 2012 USA Softball Women’s National Team as announced Wednesday by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America and USA Softball.
Last summer, Orgeron helped Team USA to gold medal titles at the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City in July and the Pan American Games in October. She became the first UL softball player to earn a spot on the USA National Team and third to compete with USA Softball, joining Alana Addison (2002 Elite team) and Brooke Mitchell (2004 Elite team).
The 2011 and 2012 Sun Belt Player of the Year led the Cajuns with 22 home runs and 94 RBI this past season. She finishes her career as the UL and SBC all-time RBI leader with 288, which ranks sixth best all-time in NCAA history. The New Orleans, La. native tied NCAA records with six grand slams this season and nine in her career. Her 70 career home runs rank third on the Ragin’ Cajuns career charts, while her 62 career doubles rank first in SBC history.
Orgeron was named a first team All-American by the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association of America and was a finalist for both USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year and the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.
The USA Women’s National team will compete in six different events in the United States and Canada. Fans in the United States will get four opportunities to see the team in action with two exhibition stops scheduled against the USA Elite team in Summersville, W. Va. on June 14 and Ashland, Ohio on June 18. They will also participate in the Title IX 40th Anniversary Celebration Game against Canada on June 23 and the World Cup of Softball VII presented by Lumber Liquidators, June 27- July 2, in Oklahoma City. Following the World Cup, the Women’s National Team is slated to compete July 4-9 at the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International Championship in Surrey, B.C., Canada, and July 13-22 at the International Softball Federation (ISF) Women’s World Championship in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.
