Soccer: Foster’s Header Leads Cajuns to Overtime Win Over McNeese in Opener

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Gayla Foster’s header in the 96th minute provided the Ragin’ Cajuns soccer team a season-opening 2-1 overtime victory against in state rival McNeese State at Cowgirl Field in Lake Charles, La. Tuesday evening.
The win marks the first victory of the year for the UL athletic department and is the third year in a row the Cajuns (1-0) have opened the season with a win.
With the game knotted at 1-all in the 96th minute, freshman Brooke Gros sent a corner kick into the far post to Foster, who put the game away with a perfect header.
“It’s always a great way to start the season with a road win,” head coach Scot Wieland said. “The final goal was executed to perfection. Brooke made a great pass and Gayla made a tremendous play on the ball.”

Junior forward Shelby Isley broke a scoreless contest in the 71st minute as she netted the squad’s first goal of the season to give the Cajuns a 1-0 advantage.
Louisiana looked to have the game won in regulation before McNeese midfielder Haley Lyons scored an unassisted goal in the 89th minute to equal the game at 1-1.
“When you give up a goal that late in the game it’s always deflating,” Wielad mentioned. “When the girls came off the field, I saw determination in their eyes and they said ‘let’s go.’ They came out in overtime with an extreme amount of confidence and I’m very proud of these girls on the win.”
Both teams attempted 10 shots with seven coming on target. Senior goal keeper Amanda Moorefield recorded six saves and added to the record books, picking up her all-time leading 18th career victory.

Louisiana continues play this Friday, Aug. 24 as they host their home opener against Prairie View A&M at 7:00 p.m. at the Ragin’ Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
