Baer & Hamilton Garner Player of The Week Honors
Duo Honored Following UL’s 40-0 Blanking Of Lamar

LAFAYETTE, La. — Senior kicker Brett Baer and sophomore defensive lineman Justin Hamilton reaped the rewards on Monday following UL’s season-opening 40-0 win over Lamar as each collected player of the week honors.

Baer was named the Collegefootballperformance.com National Placekicker of the Week and the special teams player of the week by both the Sun Belt Conference and the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association while Hamilton was tabbed as the defensive player of the week by the LSWA and the honorable mention defensive player of the week by Collegeperformance.com.

“Brett and Justin are deserving of these honors because they came to Cajun Field on Saturday ready to play and it showed,” head coach Mark Hudspeth said.  “They definitely provided us with a spark early in the game, which helped us to dominate Lamar.”

Baer, a native of Brandon, Miss., received the honors after connecting on field goals from 52, 40, 39 and 32 yards and converting all four extra points as part of a record-setting performance.

The four field goals allowed him to extend his string of consecutive field goals made to 15, breaking Mike Shafer’s school record of 14 set in 1994.

With 16 points in the game, Baer tied the school mark for points in a game by a kicker.  He matched the 16 points by Rafael Septien (vs. San Jose State in 1974) and Mike Lemoine (vs. Central Michigan in 1989).

Hamilton, a native of Natchez, Miss who has earned the nickname “Juice” from his teammates, celebrated his first career start on Saturday by getting the defense going by forcing a pair of turnovers on Lamar’s first two series of the game.

On Lamar’s first possession, Hamilton sacked quarterback Ryan Mossakowski, causing him to fumble.  Justin Anderson recovered at the UL 29, setting up a Jacob Maxwell two-yard touchdown catch.

On the next series, Hamilton stripped Lamar running back Herschel Sims of the football and Qyendarius Griffin recovered at the UL 25 to set up a Baer field goal.

Hamilton finished the night with four tackles for loss (-13 yards) with a quarterback sack and a pair of forced fumbles.

The Ragin’ Cajuns return to the field this week, opening up Sun Belt Conference play at Troy on Saturday (Sept. 8) at 6:00 p.m.
