Jim was in a funeral home in Texas City where Martha lived when he passed.

James “Jim” Monroe McNutt passed away in Brenham, Texas on March 12, 2024 at the age of 84. Born on August 21, 1939 in Columbia, Tennessee to Richard Claude McNutt and Aliene Chambliss McNutt. Jim grew up in Corsicana, Texas and then on to El Paso, Texas where he loved playing baseball and fishing in the Rio Grande. He served with the United States Marine Corp, serving as an MP at Camp Pendleton in San Diego and then as a Corporal on the USS Lexington off the coast of the Philippines. Once home from the Marines, Jim received a full football scholarship from the University of Southwestern Louisiana. Jim, #85, was a Right End that received the Sportsmanship award and was voted Most Valuable Lineman of the “64” Squad. At that time, he was rated as one of the best all-around ends in USL’s 57 year football history and twice received All-Gulf States Conference Honors. USL is where Jim earned his Bachelor’s degree and met his wife, Martha Bacque McNutt.
Jim was an avid sportsman, enjoying fishing and competitive target shooting for decades. He never missed his children’s baseball, softball, volleyball or football games. Of all of Jim’s accomplishments, he was most proud of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his children, James B. McNutt of Nederland, TX, Cathy McNutt Damon (Jamey Damon) of Brenham, TX, Paul R. McNutt of Summit, NJ, and his grandchildren, Nick Damon, Mary Catherine Damon Alford, Keaton Butler and Corinne McNutt. Alzheimer’s did not allow him to know his great-grandchildren, Copeland Alford, Jackson Alford and Leighton Damon (coming in April).
Jim lived his life to the fullest and rarely looked back. He loved adventure and traveling through the southwestern US. New Mexico was his “happy place” so in lieu of a service, his children will take him to the Land of Enchantment for his final resting place.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Aliene McNutt, brother, Jack McNutt and sister, Jill McNutt. He is survived by a sister Janice Kidd.
